Coalbanks was renamed Lethbridge in 1885. Soon after this a major coal mining operation started to develop in the coulee regions of Coalbanks. It took the intervention of the NWMP (North-West Mounted Police) to stop these illegal activities.

Before the Canadian government established full control over the area a booming whiskey trade took root. As more and more European settlers came many Natives were forced into a new life and eventually the Natives signed over their control of the territory to Canada. The valley provides some shelter from the wind, which can be quite strong at almost any time of the year.īefore European settlement of Lethbridge the area was under the control of the Blackfoot tribe of Native Americans. The Old Man River runs through this interesting landscape. The coulees are a valley formed by erosion. The natural beauty of the area is in its starkness. Lethbridge has approximately 83 000 people, and that number is growing fast. It is quiet and on the small side, but has a friendly population. The city is a commercial hub for the many smaller farming and ranching communities in the surrounding area.
The trail is actually a part of the Coulee Loop (see #18).Lethbridge is located in southern Alberta, Canada. It will bring you to the road connecting Indian Battle Park (#18) and Helen Schuler Nature Reserve (#20). The trail goes all the way down to the base of the bridge if you want to walk right under it. Anyone from Alberta will recognize the label of Old Style Pilsner, which was originally brewed here.įrom the small parking lot at the gardens (closed for renovation when I visited I had to park further up the road), you can follow a trail parallel to the bridge (pictured above) for unbeatable views. The bridge makes my list of top places to visit in all of Alberta and is on my recommended road trip to Giants of the Prairies in Southern Alberta.įor the best views of the bridge, try Brewery Gardens, which is the site of Sick’s Breweries, the first large scale brewery in Lethbridge. It is the largest train structure in Canada and largest bridge of its kind in the world. This incredible steel trestle spanning 1624 meters across the Old Man River was built by the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1907-1909, and trains still run across it today. The Lethbridge High Level Bridge (or Lethbridge Viaduct) is the most iconic sight in Lethbridge.
